GPR Scanning for Concrete Floor Slab Surveys

Concrete Voiding can be Picked Up by GPR Scanning

Face Consultants provide Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scanning for floor slab surveys.

The most common way to calculate the thickness and strength of in-situ concrete slabs is by taking cores. However, core extractions create holes in the slab, do not make allowance for variations in thickness across the floor, are labour-intensive, and can be costly.

Coring also runs the risk of missing important ‘as built’ information with regard to the slab reinforcement size and spacings.

If combined with GPR scanning, fewer cores typically need taking. The two methods used together can enable a more comprehensive overview of the concrete strength and reinforcement available within the slab.

What is GPR Scanning?

GPR scanning is a fast, non-intrusive, non-destructive, and cost-effective way of measuring slab thickness, locating reinforcement, identifying voids and structural supports.

How does Ground Penetrating Radar work?

GPR scanning uses electromagnetic waves which penetrate the subsurface of the concrete slab.

Changes to the electrical field, created by differing responses from substances within the slab, are identified by a receiving antenna and then recorded and analysed.

How we use GPR Scanning

GPR Scanning Concrete Floor Slab Survey

Although GPR scanning is quick and easy to do, the results require technical knowledge and skill to analyse and interpret the data provided.

Our many years of experience in the design, testing, and surveying of commercial and industrial concrete floors means we can use the results to help identify whether slabs are ground bearing or pile supported. Also, the location, if any, of reinforcement or voids.

We can then use the results to evaluate the slab’s load bearing capacity. This is especially useful for warehouses with a change of use, whether for the existing occupiers or new owners who have little or no knowledge of the floor design and construction.
