Face Consultants showed that they’re not just the floor testers and surveyors that you might think they are, after designing a 310 metre drag racing strip for Swan Hill City Council in Victoria, Australia.
The drag strip is being built thanks to a $2 million contribution from the Victorian Government, $450,000 from the Council and $220,000 worth of in-kind support from the Swan Hill Drag Racing Club.
It’s quite a project that see’s Swan Hill become the longest concrete racing surface in Australia.
“The global drag strip association (ANDRA) insist on specific criteria that a drag strip must comply to for safety” said Glenn Powell of Face Consultants PTY in Australia. “In addition to a flat floor, considerations have to be given to the temperature variances, heating system and varying weather conditions.”
Drag strips are something that Face Consultants are no strangers to. Face Middle East were also involved in the design of one in Ras Al Khaimha, Abu Dhabi; and another in Bahrain.
Did you know:
- The shaping of the drag strip subgrade, and the construction of the spectator mound meant that 14,000 cubic metres of earth was moved in the process.
- 3000 tonnes of concrete was used in the project.
- 8km of tubing has been looped inside the first 120m of the concrete track, creating a unique temperature control system that has the potential to alter the surface temperature by up to eight degrees.
“It may sounds a simple process to build a straight strip of road, however, the flatness tolerance required means the road has to be flat, very flat” Mr Powell said. “We were contacted to provide a design solution due to our previous drag strip experience and expertise in super flat floor design and construction.”
